Task 9b

Task 9B

Comprehend ASL proficiently during the interpreting task, including sign

vocabulary choice and sign modification to show variation in meaning and

grammatical functions.

Knowledge and Skill Statements

Knowledge of:

1. Phonemic structure

2. Morphologic structure (e.g., semantics)

3. Syntax

4. Functional pragmatics (e.g., how settings alter the pragmatic function and form of discourse)

5. Role and function of fingerspelling

Taylor- ASL to English

Many interpreting errors are due to lack of comprehension of ASL. Accuracy of interpretation is affected by speed of ASL delivery, signer style and regional differences between signer and interpreter.

Knowledge lean skills are related to ASL comprehension at the lexical and discourse level.
Knowledge rich skills refer to context sensitive interpretation skills that allow an interpreter to communicate the subtle differences in meaning and tone that the signer is expressing.

Possible Errors:
Fingerspelling-
- FS words are omitted.
- when fs is rapid, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- When FS is slow, the interpretation is inaccurate. Does not convey additional emphasis.
- Lexicalized FS is interpreted inaccurately.
- When partial FS is present, the interpreation is inaccurate.

Numbers like Ratios, Ages and Fractions

ASL Lexicon:
- The meaning of the ASL sign is omitted.
- Possessive pronouns are confused with nominative pronouns. (his/he)
- Nouns are interpreted as verbs.
- Noun classifications are used inaccurately.
- Compound signs used inaccurately.
- Body-anchored signs are interpreted inaccurately.
- New or regional signs interpreted inaccurately.

Classifiers or SASS
- referent indicated by CL/SASS interpreted inaccurately or omitted altogether.
- THe movement depicted by the CL/SASS is interpreted inaccurately.
- CL/SASS used to describe the size or shape of object is inaccurate.
- WHen more than one CL or SASS is used, their relationship is interpreted inaccurately.
- NMS associated with CL or SASS used inaccurately.

NMS:
- Facial adjectives are interpreted inaccurately.
- Facial adverbs interpreted inaccurately.
Eye gaze interpreted inaccurately.
NMS of head and torso omitted.

Negation:
- Negation omitted.
- Negation place with wrong clause in sentence in the interpretation.
- Negation added when not in the source message.

Emphasis:
- Signer inflects the sign for SLOW to mean "extremely slow" and that is not conveyed in the interpretation.
- Rhetorical questions used for emphasis interpreted inaccurately.
- Eye gaze is used for emphasis and this is not conveyed in interpretation.
- Interpreter makes no distinction between emphatic signing or spelling and the rest of the message.
- Bracketing of information.

Modulation:
- When verbs are modulated they are interpreted inaccurately. LOOK, with amazement interpreted "glance at".
- Nouns Modulated inaccurately. HOUSE, signed using a great deal of space should be interpreted very large house.
- Pronouns modulated incorrectly.
- NMS are used to modulate the meaning of signs incorrectly. SMALL signed with squinting eyes and pursed lips should be interpreted very small.
- Singular or plural forms interpreted incorrectly.

Temporal Aspect:
- Verb tense interpreted incorrectly.
- Duration interpreted incorrectly.
- Intensity interpreted incorrectly.
- Frequency interpreted incorrectly.

Distribution of an Action:
- Distinctions between the involvement of some, many or all of the people, places or things are incorrect.
- Distinctions between ALL and EACH are inaccurate.

Borrowed Vocabulary:
- Initialized signs are interpreted incorrectly.
- English affixes are interpreted incorrectly.
- Borrowed sign from other countries are interpreted incorrectly.
- Contact variety signing is interpreted incorrectly.

Facial Markers:
- WH questions are interpreted incorrectly.
- Y/N questions interpreted incorrectly.
- Statements are interpreted as questions.
- The signer's emotions are confused with grammar.

ASL Referencing:
- The subject talking or performing an action on someone or something is interpreted incorrectly.
- The recipient of an action is not accurately identified in the interpretation.
- When nouns or concepts are established in space and referred to later, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- When space is restructured, it is interpreted inaccurately.

Spatial Relationships:
- When spatial relationships are established, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- When spatial relationships are changed, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- An interpretation is inaccurate when the signer uses spatial location to identify a particular referent throughout his or her discourse.
- When the non-dominant hand is used to express spatial relationships, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- When different perspectives are signed, the interpretation is inaccurate.

Utterance Boundaries:
- When a lexical item is used for an utterance boundary, it is interpreted inaccurately.
- A pause is used for utterance boundary incorrectly.
- An eye blink or head nod is used for utterance boundary incorrectly.
- Shift in the physical stance of the body is made for utterance boundary interpreted incorrectly.
- Signer's hands are used for the utterance boundary interpreted incorrectly.
- New topic introduced interpreted incorrectly.

Hand Dominance:
- Left handed signer's message is interpreted incorrectly.
- When the signer changes dominance back and forth from the left to right hand during discourse, the interpretation is inaccurate.
- When the non-dominant hand is used for structuring space interpreted incorrectly.
- When non-dominant hand is used for emphasis, interpreted incorrectly.
